I would argue that the flaw in your thesis is that you fail to distinguish between the generations where these events take place.

The boomers were raised in the religious beaver cleaver land of America's 1950s. They have that foundational grounding even though they have rejected it and fancy themselves rebels and liberators... they failed to hand that to their children and so it has disappeared from society. Now they have been given the ring of power since Clinton and the last three decades have shown that without God such power is corrupting and destructive especially in the hands of these arrogant and spoiled children of the greatest generation... Boomers grew up in a walled City protected by their elder's sacrifices. Once they came of age they tore down the Walls and they are wondering why rampaging hordes are destroying their civilization....
