High profile evangelicals like @philvischer @SkyeJethani and @kkdumez spend a lot of time and passion focusing on "Christian nationalism". While it's certainly an issue in many churches in terms of danger to the planet it's negligible.
American becomes the weaponized iron giant for liberal causes.
Just keep showing pictures of women and children refugees and the masculinists and feminists will agree that evil doers must pay!

In the First World War Progressivism learns to embrace a certain justification for war as a liberal, globalist cause. It of course stumbled after the war with the "League of Nations" and the failed attempt to make war "illegal".

The current religious culture war continues the battle between institutionalized religion and sublimated Establishment American Protestantism. Much of the Democratic party is post-Christian Protestantism with prayers optional.

Conservative politicians may do silly pushups and men may play with guns but when the America as a whole wants to play the rescuing god we go to war. Now is one such moment.

I would argue that the flaw in your thesis is that you fail to distinguish between the generations where these events take place.
The boomers were raised in the religious beaver cleaver land of America's 1950s. They have that foundational grounding even though they have rejected it and fancy themselves rebels and liberators... they failed to hand that to their children and so it has disappeared from society. Now they have been given the ring of power since Clinton and the last three decades have shown that without God such power is corrupting and destructive especially in the hands of these arrogant and spoiled children of the greatest generation... Boomers grew up in a walled City protected by their elder's sacrifices. Once they came of age they tore down the Walls and they are wondering why rampaging hordes are destroying their civilization....
