Jon Stewart and the Battle for Sense-Making
He hasn't said "Egregore" yet but it's probably a matter of time
In today's video I take a look at @jonstewart . He's a famous guy who went from a marginally successful comedian to a significant figure in American Politics after 9/11 and the second Iraq War.
For many born in the 1960s the second Iraq war was a sort of second Vietnam in terms of "sense-making" as @WisdomRebel likes to call it. @jonstewart exemplifies this.
.@jonstewart and I both are about the same age and both come from the NYC area. People have commented that I remind them of him except with a beard which doesn't really make a lot of sense to me.
I stopped watching @TheDailyShow when @jonstewart left it, saw him on a thing now and then a my interest was re-awakened when the YouTube algorithm fed me up this video.
This guy complained about @jonstewart as a Gen-X er illuminating political and media hypocrisy but being too cynical to imagine changing the world. I see Stewart as more of a tweener, not old enough for Boomers, not young enough for an Xer.
When I first started reading @roddreher years ago I noticed that the Second Iraq War broke something in him too, but Dreher from the Right instead of Stewart from the Left. It was a loss of faith in institutions.
.@jonstewart popped up again during the @joerogan Spotify controversy defending Rogan.
I wouldn't have used these words in the early 00s, but he's doing sense-making.
But this isn't just the words we're using, it's the subtleties of communication. Sometimes the MANNER in which you communicate speaks more loudly than the numbers...
And it is intentional, fueled by the metrics, algorithms and the desire to dominate.
And the people at the top basically claim they are helpless…
I'm waiting to see what he does with the Ukrainian war. We're not the ones launching shock and awe this time and the Russians are going to destroy that country. But the battle for sense-making will continue.
Just after I published this I got my answer.
This one was especially good.
