Nostalgia, Preaching, Church Membership and Fandoms
Cultures really are just very large Churches
Was talking to a friend who was complaining about the preaching in his church. Preaching sometimes becomes a strange nostalgic rehearsal of some doctrinal "glory days" moment in the history of that denomination or tradition.
The sermon is a stale, unintelligible, uninspiring rehearsal of the buzzwords/holy-words of that tradition. The preacher is rewarded for rehearsing them for those within the tradition.
One of the best 2nd wave convo videos of @jordanbpeterson is his talk with @clayroutledge about nostalgia. Nostalgia takes a beating for the same reason preaching like this takes a beating.
It makes no sense to the outsider, but it's member-berries for the faithful.
We're watching the same thing happening with fandoms and movies. https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx1v42l0W5o1whc6WlonPM108m23K7-LQc
Studio execs who turn on their fandoms are the new denominational elites who hate their membership. https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkxmzv32qBJ5RlCnP7FOIDfDBn4hhugCxiK
